Nanpean Cultural Centre Restoration Project
THE CUTURAL CENTRE: OLD CHURCH ROOMS
NANPEAN. (Nr St Dennis) CORNWALL

The Celtic Heritage Trust took on the lease for the Nanpean Old Church Rooms late October 2005, the building; a past community resource had been boarded up for some five years and had fallen into serious disrepair.
MEAN BOCCONOC ESTATES : LOSTWITHIEL- you must read this!!
This may surprise you but it demonstrates the meaness of estates- The Celtic Heritage Trust is repairing this building for the loal community and we are being charged by the BOCCONNOC ESTATES £150.00 per week for the honour. How shocking is that! Up to yet we have spent over 25,000 in man hours and on materials and we continue to receive letters demanding more money even though the building can not be used as a resource yet- |
BEFORE! Clearly the building had the capacity to provide a very valuable resource for both the local community and our members and needed attention and dedication to bring it back into use. The St Stephens Estate (Boccanoc Estates) have the ownership of the building and have allowed us a discounted lease for 4 years in order that works can be carried out. |

What an absolute disgrace, it is difficult to imagine why such a wonderful building had been allowed to fall in to such a state. It must be said that the local youth have really helped us to get the work done. However as always there are those that do not like change – and have made life most uncomfortable for us. What is most worrying these particular folk are the main stay of the Christian community perhaps the known phrase of Love Thy Neighbour has completely passed them by- but we Celts are forgiving creatures and therefore we shall wait patiently for them to see good for what it is. |
The building was in fact much worse than first anticipated and has proven to be an enourmous challenge to get it into any sort of shape, the kitchen fell to pieces completly due to the rot and damp, the walls required stripping back and re-rendering (4 inches thick) ceilings required patching and every inch of the place needed some renovation. Outside grass and bushs had grown up to almost cover 1/5th of the building. The picture above shows what the building looks like after 4 months work. The pictures below show our volunteer task force- doing what they do best action. .. . We have been particularily lucky in that we have established some good FREINDS for this project- local businesses that have provided us with materials and we would like to take this opportunity to salute you fine people! Without your kindness where would we be - your contributions have really kept our spirits up |

Mallets Home Hardware kindly donated a whole van load of paints and fillers - this really helped with the decorating as the walls just sucked up paint like it had never seen any was going out |
Thank You Mallets! |

AFTER It is now 2007 and as you can see the main hall is looking rather different from the photograph taken in 2006. All the walls have been re plastered and painted the roof slates have been replaced and the ceilings have had new plasterboards and again repainted. The two back offices are now almost up to scratch. The windows that were broken have been replace ad the toilet facilities are looking by far more cleaner- although we want to replace the ‘bodge’ plumbing job that had been done prior to us taking on he building. We have requested the Restormel Borough Council for a grant to put in disabled facilities - but we have been waiting for almost three months for the BOCCONNIC ESTATES to provide the structure plans- we are still waiting. The council will not provide a grant until the planning officer has overviewed the documents. We would be so grateful if we could raise enough funds to redo the kitchen we have the equipments but cannot afford to do the work need at the moment- so any offers of help, equipment would be most welcolmed. |

We are currently in discussion with relevant stakeholders to discuss how we can maximise the hall once we have completed the renovations.
Thanks to our volunteer task force, it is looking that the building will be back in use March 2006! Well done Culture Crews! Anybody interested in using this wonderful space please do not hesitate to contact us-it will be fitted with a fully operational commercial kitchen and have a shower facility. The hall is 70 feet x 35 feet with a raised stage area.
